Why did James and John ask Jesus for a place of honor in his kingdom?

The reason seems unclear until we look more closely at what the gospel tells us about the brothers, James and John, and at the context of these remarks. In Mark 3:17, John and James are referred to as Boanerges, which means 'sons of thunder'. In Mark 10:35-45, they ask Jesus to be granted a wish, which is to be seated at a place of honour, on his right and left hands in heaven. This is a strange request, made long before they become aware of the danger that Jesus faces, but is very similar to the story of Castor and Polydeuces, sons of Zeus the thunderer, who asked for immortality and are depicted iconically as seated on the right and left hands of Zeus. This could be no more than a coincidence, unless there is something to link the two pairs of brothers at this point. But Mark's Gospel is based on a framework parallel structure, which uses context and association to develop themes that are not otherwise apparent. In this structure, the gospel uses the storm in event K (4:36-41) to remind us, by association, that the two disciples are 'sons of thunder' and links this to event K', in which Jesus rebukes the brothers for seeking a place of honour: A .
