The Palatines emigrated from Germany in the 1700's because the French invaded their land and destroyed their farms. The winter was unusually arctic and they were unable to stay and begin again. Also, they had experienced persecution for their Protestant faith and they turned to the Protestant community in Rotterdam and Queen Anne Stuart in London for help to get to new land in the American colonies. The Palatines did not have permission from the Elector Palatine to emigrate so they left enmasse in the middle of the night. This year we celebrate the 300th anniversary of the Palatine emmigration to America.

I have just found out through my DNA that 35% of it is from the Germanic plan.  From six generations back there's no one from that part of Europe.  But seven back there soneone with a German name Henning!
