That has a very simple explanation.

In Portugal the most common and much appreciated roof tiles (very popular throughout the Western Europe i would say) are called Roman Roof Tiles. Other similar tiles very much appreciated in Portugal are similar to these ones and are called Portuguese Roof Tiles.

The color red is due to the material they are built in. Most common materials are clay and also ceramic. The red/terracotta color they have is due to the clay itself.

These roof tiles are very much appreciated not only because of the beauty of the finish product but also because they are very good for warm weather like we have in South of Europe where temperatures are very high in Summer (30ºC-40ºC). They are also very cheap.
