Addams and her longtime companion Ellen Gates Starr founded the Hull-House settlement in 1889 as a center for social services for poor immigrants.
She was a co-founder of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP).

∙ 8y agoThe first woman to win a Nobel Peace Prize was Baroness Bertha von Suttner, who was very active in the international peace movement in the 1890s, and was also a friend of Alfred Nobel, the man who had established the Nobel Prizes. The first American woman to win it (the Baroness was born in Prague, Czechoslovakia) was Jane Addams, a social worker and peace activist who was given the award in 1931.
