Tony Blair was the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom in 2002.
He had been in office since winning a landslide victory against the Conservatives in the election of May 1997.
He supported US Military action against Afghanistan following the World Trade Centre Disaster, but also took Britain into war with Iraq in support of the USA, which was illegal under international law and led to massive unpopularity at home. He never recovered from this notoriety, especially as it led to the terrorist bomb attacks on the London transport network on 7th July 2005, which saw 51 people killed.
Blair never apologised for his actions, and had an increased tendency to behave like a dictator, using bouncers to drag his opponents from the room at political conferences and in some cases, tabling political proposals that were on the verge of being extreme right. This created such public hatred, and such opposition within his own party, that he was forced to resign on 11th May 2007, exactly ten years to the day since taking office.
