Galileo was essentially one of the first astronomers. He did not invent the telescope but he did improve it. The telescope was invented in 1603 in Holland by Hans Lippershay, a dutch spectacle maker. He is also the first person to prove the Sun rotates on its axis and that the Earth rotates on its axis and that it revolves around the sun based on Copernican's theory. Galileo invented the horse powered water pump. He also set down the foundation of the Newton laws.

∙ 9y agoHe was an Italian astronomer who lived around 1600 and carried on a long dispute with Vatican theologists over whether the Earth or the Sun was at the centre of the universe (as known at that time) . . . . . . Difficult to say what his most important discovery was, but one important one was the discovery of moons in orbit around Jupter. This was the first time anything had been discovered that could be shown not to be revolving round the Earth, and with later evidence it led - after Galileo's lifetime - to the acceptance of the heliocentric theory, with the Sun at the centre.
