It could be argued that there were two heroes of the Mexican-American War. * General Winfield Scott, a visually-impressive conqueror, landed at Veracruz and fought his way to Mexico City. The Mexicans offered to make him ruler of Mexico but he declined, and neither was he interested in becoming a US President, although he probably could have had it easily. * General Zachary Taylor who fought on the Texas-Mexico border was the opposite of Scott; unassuming, common in appearance, rough & ready, but he did become a US President after the war.

The Mexican-American War produced primarily 3 war heroes. The first is Captain John Charles Frémont, nicknamed "The Pathfinder". His contribution to the war was the Bear Flag Revolt, where he led a revolt in San Francisco with a company of 60 to 70 men. This revolt led to the succession of California territory from Mexico. The second one is Zachary Taylor, nicknamed "Rough n' Ready". He led a party of Texan settlers into Mexican territory across the Nueces River to the Rio Grande. He got into a skirmish with Mexican troops, giving the US a means of justifying the war. After President Polk officially declared war with Mexico, Taylor led a expedient and efficient campaign that allowed him to take several strategic Northern provinces of Mexico. The third hero, and probably the most important, is Winfield Scott. Scott was chosen by President Polk to head the Mexico City offensive campaign. This was a beautifully carried out campaign, and has received much attention from historians. All three of these heroes ran in presidential campaigns. Frémont ran as a Republican, Talor and Scott both ran as Whigs. Only Taylor ever reached the Whitehouse.

Teddy Roosevelt was involved in the Spanish-American War. In the Mexican-American War, Generalissimo Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna was a hero from the Mexican side, and Stephen Watts Kearny (saved at one point by Kit Carson's efforts) was a hero for the American side.
