Pepperoni is an American invention and has no real foundation in the cuisine of Italy. However it clearly utilizes flavorings and herbs that are typical of Italian food, so it melds well with other Italian flavors. My own belief is that whoever came up with this based it on the Spanish Chorizo, but I have no evidence of that.
