Elizabeth I 1558-1603, was Queen of England and, separately, Queen of Ireland.

STUARTS

James I 1603-1625, was King James VI of Sotland and also became King James I of England on the death of Elizabeth I. He too, held the separate title King of Ireland.

Charles I 1625-1649, also seperately held the titles King of England, King of Scotland and King of Ireland.

Charles I was executed for "treason" in 1649, bringing an end to The English Civil War.

From 1649 until 1653, the country was governed by "The Barebones Parliament" which set itself the task of deciding what kind of government should rule the country.

Oliver Cromwell 1653-1658, became "Lord Protector of the Commonwealth of Great Britain and Ireland."

He was succeeded by his son, Richard Cromwell 1658-1659, who was also "Lord Protector"

In 1660, the Monarchy was restored and Charles II 1660-1685, became King of England. Like his predecessors he was also separately King of Scotland and King of Ireland.

He was succeeded by his son James II 1685-1688 who, because he was a Catholic was deposed in favour of his daughter -

Mary II and William III - 1689-1702. Mary died in 1694 and her husband, William III, reigned alone until his death in 1702. Under his reign the crowns of England and Scotland were formally united and he became King of the United Kingdom of Great Britain (which included England, Scotland and Wales) and he was also separately King of Ireland.
