What actually happens is the computer all ready knows and it can tell you the answer.
To tell which graphic card is in your computer you must first click the start button and click run. Then type in Dxdiag then click display and you should see all your graphics.
This would generally be observed on a laptop/notebook system when you are using the integrated screen and do not have an external monitor attached. If you try to switch from one display to the other, it will tell you it has no external display to switch to.

The difference between two variances
If you're running Windows, then right-click on My Computer -> Manage -> Device Manager (in the left hand pane) -> Display Adapters (in the right hand pane).
