Not all cords are polarized or have clear delineations for positive and negative. For instance, a lamp would generally not care about polarity.

For those that are marked, such as for non-heavy duty electronics, the positive side will be entirely black, while the negative side will have a white stripe on it.

a home power outlet doesn't have a positive or negative side because it is AC power. only DC power has pos. and neg.
