The triggering event was the killing of Ernst von Rath, a German diplomatic attache in France.

There were tons of events that influenced that night. For years, the Nazis had been passing more and more restrictive laws against Jews and making sure that they knew they were unwanted. One of these government actions had a specific impact on this night, because when Germany deported 17,000 Jews into Poland (who didn't accept them, so they were placed in "relocation camps") and confiscated their goods, there was a man among them named Zindel Grynszpan. When his 17 year old son, who was living in Paris at the time, found out that his family had been forced out of their home, and lost all of their possessions including their store, he became enraged and went to the German embassy. The ambassador was not there, so he shot the Third Secretary, who died two days later.

This shooting of a German ambassador by a Jewish person in France gave the Nazi administration the excuse they needed to carry out a plan that they already had before the shooting, and they rounded up Jews, destroyed their stores and property, killed at least 96 people and burned synagogues. This was not a small event. Between 1,000 and 2,000 synagogues were burned, over 7,500 businesses destroyed, and thousands of people were abused and injured. 30,000 Jews were arrested and sent to concentration camps.
