From Haynes Repair Manual #36071 Alternator - removal and installation: (1)disconnect the negative cable from the battery; (2)remove the air cleaner assembly; (3)unplug the electrical connectors from the alternator; (4)remove the electrical connector bracket (if equipped); (5) remove the drivebelt; (6)remove the three bolts holding the alternator to its mounting bracket; (7)installation is reverse of removal.
On a 1998 B 4000, it is in the housing at the attachment of the upper heater hose.

Your plugs are bad, you coil is out or you have bad plug wires. If all spark plug wires are not firing then it is the coil or a fuse in the fuse box labeled ign hope this helps B
