On June 28, 1979, Philippe Cousteau Sr. [b. December 30, 1940] died when his seaplane crashed into the Tagus River near Lisbon, Portugal. Philippe was the son of famed oceanographer Jacques-Yves Cousteau [June 11, 1910-June 25, 1997] and of Simone Melchior Cousteau [January 19, 1919-1990], the first woman scuba diver. Philippe was testing a repair on the family's Catalina PBY seaplane. The Catalina turned upside down, the fuselage broke behind the cockpit, and then the left propeller cut through the cockpit, killing Philippe.Philippe's widow Jan remembers that it took two days to locate the wreckage. An at-sea burial was held in his memory. Jan never has remarried. Their daughter Alexandra [b. March 21, 1976] was three years old. The museum includes a bronze bust of Philippe Cousteau, a large ceramic mural, and currently 15 ship anchors. The bust was sculpted by Asturian artist Vicente Menendez-Santarua Prendes [b. November 23, 1936]. The ceramic mural was designed by Ramón Rodríguez [b. January 1, 1943], Asturian artist and Director of la Escuela Municipal de Cerámica de Avilés since 1983. The mural was assembled by the school.

On September 6, 1622 a hurricane drove the ship onto the coral reefs near Dry Tortugas about 35 miles [56 kilometers] west of Key West. The hull was badly damaged, and the ship quickly sank. Everyone onboard drowned except for three sailors and two slaves. The 'Atocha' lay lost for 363 years until American treasure hunter Mel Fisher [August 21, 1922-December 19, 1998] and his son Kane located the ship after searching for 16.5 years.
