The Workmate was developed in the late '60s in England by Ron Hickman, a South African who designed the Lotus Elan.

The first Workmate bench was offered in the UK in 1973 and the US in '75.

I don't know when the 400 was made but I have an early version that does not have a number and a later one marked as a 550.

Don't know the date, but I recall reading a history of it in a book about workshop design. The story also mentions details such as the cast-aluminum frame of the early design, and the fact that Sears attempted to steal the concept...

I believe the Workmate was invented in the U.K..
