To prevent the spirits harming them they would build bonfires of special woods and celebrate all night keeping the fires going. Many other cultures also recognize this time as a time of when the dead walk the earth. This is the time of year when the earth is going from summer into the winter months and was often seen a the waning of the sun and the crops were in. A time when the world became cold and "dead" to the ancient people. They were very connected to the growing patterns of the earth and the natural world.
