The first McDonald's opened in Juneau during February of 1982. The 700 citizens of the town of Skagway, around 100 air miles north of Juneau joined together to order 150 Big Macs, 50 Quarter Pounders and 200 large orders of Fries - an order of more than $800.00. The fast food was flown to Skagway by Skagway Air commercial pilots dressed in surgical greens and masks. The planes were greeted upon landing by the Skagway High School band which had been practicing "Old McDonald Had A Farm" for days. Unfortunately the horn section's valves all froze in the cold and the band had to give up the idea. They did meet the plane though, and helped load the orders onto the local ambulance for delivery around town. That way the ambulance would also be available in case someone didn't survive their 'Mac Attack'. Ultimately all did survive, McDonalds' set a new record for sales at a new franchise location, the horn valves did thaw and a good time and good memories were created.
