What would happen if you got caught breaking a decree in the bible?

That completely depends on what decree it was. For some you had to wash, and for others you could be put to death.

There are various things The Bible instructs us to do or not to do. The vast majority of them are located in the Old Testament, and are mostly pertaining to God's relationship with the Jewish people. The sacrifices, for example, were to show that no one can save themselves from sin (which separates us from God, who is entirely without sin and therefore holy), and to give a glimpse of the future once-for-all sacrifice that Christ made on the cross.

The Ten Commandments also show that we cannot remain entirely sinless, and provide an excellent boundary guide for living. This boundary is protective, and is provided by a loving God who cares about us. When we sin, we are stepping outside of that boundary, and life becomes more difficult than God had ever intended for us to experience. This is one of the reasons why God hates sin. But sin is forgivable.

God provided the way for sin to be forgiven and those who accept the way to become citizens of Heaven when they die. He sent Christ (Jesus), who was God's Son and perfectly sinless to become the perfect sacrifice for sin. The wages or price of sin is death. We all deserve to die for our sin - that is how bad it is for us and for the world. But Christ never sinned, so when He died, He was not guilty, but He took on the guilt of all sin in the world (past, present, future, yours, mine) as if He had been guilty of it, instead of us. We deserved to die, and He died instead. There is no greater love!

When we personally accept that He has died for us and our sins, we are seen by God as if we have Christ's sinlessness - as if we had never sinned at all. As a result, genuine Christians live their lives for the One who died for them, even though no one has ever deserved Christ's death on their behalf. Because Christ never sinned himself, he was never guilty and the wages of sin (physical death) did not apply to him, so death could not keep him, and He rose back to life. Therefore, Christians know that because Christ rose again, they too will die physically, yet live again in Heaven.
