In general terms, the literature of the Renaissance differed from Medieval literature in its general spirit and typical subjects-of-focus. In respect to the former, it was vivacious, energetic, positive, even aggressive -- exuding confidence or curiosity in some significant way -- by contrast with the more reserved, humble, contrite spirit of the preceding age. Subjects-of-focus for the Renaissance differed from Medieval literature in that authors themselves were quite often featured, with their distinctive opinions and characteristics noted; at the same time, this-worldly themes and tensions were prominent, by contrast with the other-worldly or otherwise 'fantastic' themes of the previous age's writing.

∙ 9y agoThere are three main ways that the Renaissance was different from the Middle Ages:
1. Unlike the Middle Ages, the Renaissance was a time of creativity and change. Culture grew, and many famous artists came from that time like Michelangelo and Leonardo de Vinci. New techniques were used in art like perspective, which is used to make objects in a painting appear far and near.
2. Scholars took a new approach to studies. Instead of studying things like death and the nature of life (such as in the middle ages), they studied more "practical" topics. However, they also created a new emphasis on individual achievement.
3. During the Renaissance, curiosity grew, and new lands were explored. Columbus would be the prime example of this. He helped to discover the new world, however, there were many other explorers. Along with geographical discoveries, other discoveries were made in art and science.

∙ 14y agoThe middle ages are called the "Dark Ages" for a reason because people didn't read or write, the society was ruled by superstition and the church, and for a 1000 years there wasn't growth in learning. The word "renaissance" means rebirth and this is what happened. There was a rebirth of the arts, learning, and science. People were going back and looking at the classical world/work of the Greeks and Romans. They were reading and exploring. To compare the two times is like comparing night and day.

∙ 13y agoThe Renaissance (French: rebirth) is the European period following the Middle Ages (Medieval). The big difference was that Europeans of the Renaissance started to value their immediate life more, and started yearning for and digging up the lost cultural achievements of earlier times. That is, they started rediscovering the Roman and Greek architecture, literature, sculpture, etc. This was, in part, a response to the bleak times Europe had suffered during the Black Plague, and, at the same time, due to the fact that since there were fewer people to till the lands, they had to be paid better, and thus they had more money to acquire goods and culture.
The invention of the printing press also helped people to learn all sorts of things, and thus the concept of "Renaissance man" was born: a person whose knowledge spanned various different subjects. Up until one point, it was possible to read all existing books and know "everything there was to know."

Personally, I would have preferred to have lived during the Middle Ages. One reason is that people in the Renaissance looked down on those of the Middle Ages as barbarians, but the people of the Renaissance were more superstitious and less rational. They pursued witch hunts and suppressed science in ways that were not done in the Middle Ages. Unfortunately, we tend to buy the propaganda of the Renaissance, partly because they were the only ones who could make the comparison - the people of the Middle Ages did not know what was coming. There was a lot of activity in the Middle Ages in engineering, science, philosophy, education, and mathematics that we little of today. The people of the Renaissance tried to work in these fields, but took a less practical and more cosmological point of view, resulting in ecclesiastical suppression. The food and medicine in the High Middle Ages and Late Middle Ages were no worse that that of the Renaissance. The people of the Middle Ages believed that cleanliness was next to godliness, so they were clean. They also believed that bad air, with bad smells, could carry diseases. The people of the Renaissance covered their bad smells with perfume and called the Middle Ages stinky. The people of the Middle Ages believed in their religion and believed a person was no better than his word. The Renaissance produced Macchiavelli and people who thought he was just dandy. One thing the Renaissance had was a greater proportion of houses that had fireplaces and chimneys.

you need to specify the geographic region you are inquiring about. the most basic answer, about Europe, at least, is the Renaissance. The middle ages were coming to an end, the printing press was being invented, people we re-discovering knowledge gained by the Greeks and Romans, people were re-discovering the arts, architecture, technology, etc etc etc. But if you look elsewhere, you will get a different history, and even the answer of the European Renaissance is too broad, as the Renaissance hit in different times in different places, and the Renaissance itself can be defined in many, many different ways. For instance, in England around 1490-1500 Shakespeare was publishing his plays, but this form of the Renaissance had already taken place and passed in Florence, Italy, were many scholars agree the Renaissance started.
