Yes, Ellen Rimbauer is real. The house in Rose Red, her grandmother or grandfather passed it on to her, or somewhere in that and said "the house finish until you say it's finished" pretty much why they have case of mysteriously disappeared or found dead. The house would change up on its own so does that answer your question?
We used to play a game called "Starlight - Moonlight" when we were kids. It is kind of like Hide and go seek in reverse with darkness added in. We would play outside in the dark - I grew up in a very safe neighborhood. The person who is "IT" is called the ghost. He/She hides in the dark someplace where he won't easily be seen. All others stay at home base (usually the steps of our house). They chant: "One O'Clock, Two O' Clock, Three O' Clock Rock, Four O'Clock, Five O' Clock, Six O' Clock Rock, Seven O' Clock, Eight O' Clock, Nine O' Clock Rock Ten O' Clock, Eleven O' Clock, Twelve O' Clock Midnight, We hope we do, we hope we might, we hope we see a ghost tonight!" They then break up searching for the ghost. If they see him/her, they can run back to base. The ghost can either chase them or stay hidden to try to get someone else. All must see the ghost. If the ghost catches you, your it for the next game, in other words, the ghost. I have played it with my kids hidden inside a dark house - safe from strangers and actually darker and scarier in a way. One room is the home base. Just make sure there is not much to trip over. Another variation, is to have the "ghost" hide somewhere around the outside of the house. When the last refrains of "...we hope to see a ghost tonight!" are yelled out, it clues the "ghost" that they are coming. The goal for the kids is to make it all the way around the house, in the dark, and safely back to the front steps without being tagged by the "ghost". In this case, the "ghost" is the one who tags, and everyone else runs screaming around the house trying to avoid that person. Much fun!
