During World War 2, General Douglas MacArthur developed the strategy of island hopping. He would capture certain islands. The Americans would use those islands to get closer to their goal. He would leave Japanese troops on the other islands. He would not waste American lives trying to capture those islands. The objective was to get close enough to Japan to establish bomber bases capable of dropping bombs on Japan.

∙ 6y agoThe strategy was known as Leapfrogging, or island hopping. This strategy was first laid out in "War Plan Orange." This plan was drafted in 1911 under Rear Admiral Raymond P. Rodgers.
Later, in "Plan 712, Advanced Base Operations in Micronesia," which updated War Plan Orange, the island-hopping tactic was again used.
Then, a British-American reporter (Hector Bywater) publicized the strategy in two books, and Japan subsequently used the strategy in 1941 and 1942.
When the US implemented it, it was a two-pronged strategy, with the southern prong led by General Douglas MacArthur, and the northern prong led by Admiral Chester Nimitz.
MacArthur supported the strategy, but he did not invent it. MacArthur actually ended up ignoring the basic strategy in a couple of cases.

∙ 8y agoRather than fight at all the different island as we ( the US ) moved closer to Japan, He wanted to clear an almost straight path to Japan and not pacify every single island. He correctly believed a "straight to the heart" would save lives and force peace onto the islands that were never fought over. The A-bomb also radically altered the out come of the war. The display of such assume power and killing potential destroyed the resistance to peace.

∙ 8y agoConsidering that this question deals with WW 2 and the war in the Pacific Ocean against Imperial Japan, the US employed a method of freeing islands controlled by the Japanese. This, step by step, brought the power of the US closer and closer to Japan.
