Patton's highest rank was simply 'General' which denotes 4 stars. He was awarded that rank on April 14, 1945. At that time, and through the time of his death, there were four 5 star 'Generals of the Army': George Marshall, Dwight Eisenhower, Douglas McArthur, and Henry 'Hap' Arnold, all awarded when the rank was created in December, 1944. The only other general ever awarded a 5th star was Omar Bradley, but that didn't happen until 1950. The 5 star rank was retired upon Bradley's death in April, 1981.
