Why was it hard for Germany to send Lenin back to Russia?

Germany sent Lenin back to Russia hoping that he would foment further revolutionary activity in Russia so that Russia would withdraw from fighting Germany in World War I. The February Revolution of 1917 had already taken place while Lenin was in Switzerland. Despite this revolution overthrowing the Tsar, the Provisional Government acting in place of the Tsar was still committed to fighting Germany in the war. The Germans knew that most Russians wanted to end their involvement in the war, so the German High Command sent Lenin back to Russia hoping he would destabilize the government and disrupt the army and perhaps even lead another rebellion. Germany even funded Lenin and his Bolshevik Party to some degree. Lenin led the October Bolshevik Revolution, ousted the pro-war Provisional Government and entered into the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk with the Central Powers ending Russia's involvement in the war. Germany got what it wanted: an end to the war on the Russian front and the ability to move many divisions of soldiers to fight the French, British and Americans on the western front.

What was the purpose of the invasion of Italy?

Answer The Allies invaded Italy so they could continue to advance against the Nazi alliance and end the war sooner. Russia was fighting to hold back the German invasion of their country. The Allies promised to help Russia and the only way that they could was to continue to fight Germany where they could and prevent Germany from sending more troops into Russia. Italy was the only place that the Allies could attack and support the operation.

How did the French people view the Treaty of Versailles?

The French thought the Treaty of Versailles wasn't being hard enough on the Germans. The Germans had caused the death of 2 million French and France wanted 'revenge' on Germany. France wanted Germany to pay full reparations to France and if Germany resisted France would send in their army to force Germany to 'pay up', which they ultimately did.

What did the Schlieffen plan say to do?

The Plan assumed that Germany would wind up fighting France and Russia at the same time. So the plan was to attack France with most of Germany's military, going through Belgium and the forests of northern France; then to proceed onward to Paris to force France to make peace. Germany could then turn its attention to Russia. Russia was (and still is) a huge country with a lot of people and a HUGE army. Its military, however, was somewhat old fashioned and not as good as the professional German Army. Additionally, Russia was very backwards, with lousy infrastructure. So it took time for the Russian Army to "mobilize" (that is, get men together, give them weapons and training, and then send them to fight). Schlieffen knew this, and knew that France's Army was much more modern, about the same as Germany's. The fact that France is very close to Germany with good infrastructure made them even more dangerous. So the key was to knock the French Army before the massive Russian Army could arrive.

Why did Germany declare war on France in World War 1?

After Germany declared war on Russia to help Austria-Hungary (who was attacked by Russia after they attacked Serbia), France made clear their intent to stand by their ally (Russia, obviously), so Germany declared war on them, too, planning to take them out then go after Russia to prevent a two-front war. Unluckily for Germany, Russia prepared pretty quickly so Germany had to send troops to the Eastern Front as well and fight a two-front war.

Did France support the Bolshevik revolution?

France did not support the Bolshevik revolution for at least two reasons. France knew the Bolsheviks would take Russia out of World War 1 and that would allow Germany to send more of its military forces to fight the French and English. France also knew that the Bolsheviks aim was to foster revolutions in all other countries as well as in Russia. If the Bolsheviks came into power, they would be able to finance and support revolutionary socialist groups in France. Every government in Europe and in the United States feared a Bolshevik take over in Russia, because it would be an eventual threat to revolution in their own governments. Even Germany, which wanted Lenin to overthrow the Russian government, was afraid of the socialist revolution spreading to it as well.

What was the impact of Russia leaving World War 1?

The defeat of Russia enabled Germany to transfer troops to the Western Front, but not in the numbers they had hoped for, as they had unexpectedly serious problems on the Eastern Front with groups as diverse as Bolshevists and Ukrainian nationalists. Russia' defeat also fed fantasies about boundless German expansion in Eastern Europe - fantasies that played a key role in Hitler's thinking.
