There is no evidence that eclipses have any physical effect on humans. However, eclipses have always been capable of producing profound psychological effects. For millenia, solar eclipses have been interpreted as portents of doom by virtually every known civilization. These have stimulated responses that run the gamut from human sacrifices to feelings of awe and bewilderment. Although there are no direct physical effects involving known forces, the consequences of the induced human psychological states have led to physical effects. The contribution of the ancient philosopher Aristotle to Taxonomy was profound; indeed, he is rightly considered to be the founder of this science in light of the effort he put into classification as a basis for most (if not all) scientific investigations worthy of human effort. In numerous texts, many of which have been preserved through the ages, Aristotle's explanations of classification, not to overlook his careful attempts to engage in it, has served as the fundamental basis for this science ever since Aristotle's own time.
I believe "The Great Comment" refers to one of Averroes' works, though I don't know which one. He was known as "The Commentator" for Aristotle, or simply one who relays the information from Aristotle to other people. I don't think Dante in Inferno was saying that he was quoted as saying something profound, just that he was the author of a text that was a great commentary on Aristotle's philosophy. Don't quote me on this, I gathered all of that from scanning the wikipedia page of Averroes.
