Skills need to place historical events in time sequence require the use of available written resources. Historians can also conduct their own independent research to uncover new documentation never seen by previous historians. Another source of uncovering both old and new resources is to study the results of archeologists, who are involved with uncovering new information that previous scientists or historians have never seen before.

Fundamental skills of historians therefore take into account the various sources already evident and seeking new sources of information that earlier writers are not aware of.

One example of ancient sources of information may turn out to be ones that have been known about but not deemed relevant to write about. For example, ruins found in Israel, of cities long deserted and are composed of ruins can reveal certain pieces of information never given much attention. One such piece of ancient evidence is that ancient Israelites often lived in homes formerly occupied by pagans. There, at the front door entrances can be found relics from pagan tribes as well as relics from the Israelites who came later on in history. Here we can see how a sequence of events can be written about.
