In particular th ever-restless Greek city-states within the Empire in Asia Minor were prone to revolts. Added to this, they had ties to their mother cities in mainland Greece, and these latter supported and intervened on their behalf.
This resulted in 50 years of warfare between the Empire and the Greek city-states of warfare, after which the Persians gave up and went back to controlling the rest of their empire. However it was so suffessful and prosperous that it became a target for Macedonia, which took it over by conquest.
