All girls enter into their journey of becoming a woman with their first period. At that point she has left being a little girl. She has entered into the world of becoming a complete woman. A number such as 12 or 15 or 18 or whatever else has absolutely nothing to do with a human being actual growing stages of life.

-when she gets her first period

-when she turns 15 (quinceinera, Mexican tradition)

-when she gets married

-when she has kids

-when she looses the big "V"

But the truth of the matter is that none of these milestones means your a woman yet.

To ask when a girl becomes a woman, we must address the differences between girls and women.

The first difference that comes to mind when you picture a girl and a woman is age. Girls are young and women are old, right? Not always....

As a woman, I take care of myself as best I can. I know that taking care of myself and not burdening others is a nice way to live life. As a girl, I depended on others for too much and blamed others when I did not get the things I wanted/needed. Waiting for others to take care of you or your business limits yourself and can hurt your individuality. Real women do not wait for things around them to be taken care of by others. However, the independence thing can be taken too far, so it takes experience to strike a balance that works for you.

That being said, real women need to be able to confront fearful/worry-some situations. Take a gulp and a breath and dive in! Courage is womanly! Real women often give hope to others in fearful situations because they've often been through them before and know that it does no use to worry--only good can come from staying calm and doing the best you can.

I personally feel that real woman need to have empathy for others. Sure there are some "women" that are selfish and don't care about anyone but themselves, but I just consider THOSE women to be REALLY OLD GIRLS!!!

Real women do not look away from pain and suffering, but look it full-in-the-face and take the bad with the good. Typical "girls" look away from the evils of life and are superficial as a result. A good way to get a girl to become more like a woman is to let her take care of old people--like in a nursing home--for a while. I did a lot of my growing up in that place. Seeing hardships and lives well-lived and lives no-so-well lived changes a person.

I believe every REAL woman out there has endured hardships and is no stranger to suffering. Every REAL woman out there has a story and has lived to tell the tail!

Other words that I would use to describe women are...

thoughtful

knowledgeable

responsible

respectful

enduring

gracious

kind

loving

caring

strong

SELF-AWARE

You know when you're in the room with a woman or with a child!

In conclusion, a girl has become a woman after she has made a drastic change from being in a mindset of selfishness to self-awareness and selflessness. There are many old "women" that still don't get it! And there are some "girls" that have lead a tough life and even though they could be considered "girls" because of their age, they are strong, enduring, thoughtful women!

I became a woman at 23. Just a few months ago. I know I'm there now because of all the crap I've been through and how I came to terms with it all. I'm able to do so much more on my own. I don't fear or cry as easily as I used to. I don't hang out with bad people. I like to keep a peaceful atmosphere around me and show others the positives in life. I still rely on others for support, but the key to that is balance and the ability to return the favor!

Here's a good way to tell a woman--look to see who the girls pick on! lol* Girls are often selfish, jealous, envious, easily intimidated... and they don't care to control those emotions because it's just not important to them or they don't know how to!

so yeah... that's my answer!

I agree to an extent with the post above.

However, I believe that people grow up in their own time.

I am 22 year old female, a late bloomer, and still have so much growing up to do. There were times when I tried to force myself to blindly accept certain realities and as a result have learned that that doesn't work unless you have reached your own personal level of understanding and maturity.

Take marriage for example. A marriage required a lot of self-sacrifice. Some women marry at 18, 20, 35, or 65. Some don't marry at all. But usually, it happens when the person knows it's the right time for them.

One man's view: According to the book "Ready, Set, Grow!"

"During puberty, a girl's body changes into a woman's body."

- Lynda Madaras.

I have to agree with that, although the end of puberty is usually about two years after a girl's first menstruation. When a girl becomes a woman mentally depends on her education and culture. Mental maturity may come at the same time as physical maturity (in many cultures throughout the world), long after physical maturity (in modern Western cultures where parents try to prolong childhood as much as possible), or even before physical maturity. Throughout most of recorded history the legal age of marriage was 12, even though some girls didn't reach puberty until 18.

A great book on this subject is Robert Epstien's "The Case Against Adolescence." I'm working on a documentary of one girl's passage through puberty and invite comments on my work-in-progress: www.GirlBecomesWoman.com

A girl becomes a woman when she is about eighteen. There is much more to becoming a woman than having your period or growing boobs:)
