Oxygen is one of the most electronegative elements in the Biological world. This electronegativity is needed by the end of the ETC. The purpose of the ETC is to line up a succession of redox reactions by which electrons are passed down through the cytochomes. But in order to do this, the second molecule needs to be more electronegative than the first, the third more than the second, etc. If this isn't the case, then the electrons won't move down the chain.

So the very last electron acceptor needs to be electronegative enough to nab those electrons - this happens to be oxygen. Other elements like sulfur or nitrogen can be used as a final acceptor as well, but only for extremophiles which inhabit environments with low oxygen.

You need a element of strong electronegativity to pull the electrons down the chain, which ensures that protons are pumped into the outer lumen of the mitochondria where they can come down their concentration gradient through ATP-synthase making ATP. The oxygen picks up electrons and protons, thus forming water.

The electron transport chain (ETC) is a electron channel in the inner membrane of the mitochondria.

So, what does the ETC have to do with aerobic respiration?

The ETC is the final step of aerobic respiration (Glycolysis -> Krebs Cycle -> ETC) and its primary purpose is to produce ATP. Because the ATP synthase is located at the ETC, the excess amount of H+ molecules (split from H2O, commonly known as water) goes through the ATP synthase to create ATP, which is located in the end of ETC.
