You may be asking about cast iron. It's frequently used as a grill top and as pans that are molded from the hot metal. Used a lot for camping although very heavy. Once it's "seasoned" (meaning, it's coated with oil and allowed to remain in a hot oven for a few hours without any food in it), it's virtually non-stick. It should never be washed with water because it rusts.
