Some African slaves in North America were given pieces of second-hand fine china as hand-me-downs from their 'masters'. Rather than using the fine china tea cups for drinking tea, the African slaves would use them for measuring flour, corn meal, water, etc. when cooking. Several cookbooks from the Old South include "tea cups" as units of measurement presumably taken from 'Creole' recipes.
