What is the difference between a Brigade General and a Major General?

There is no such rank as Brigade General. You're probably thinking of Brigadier General. Brigadier General is a one star rank, whereas Major General is a two star rank. Usually, a Brigade will be commanded by a Colonel, although it's not unheard of for a Brigadier General to be in command of a brigade. However, more often than not, they'll serve as a deputy to the Division Commander (who would usually be a Major General).
