Turkestan is a region composed of four countries in their entirety: Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, and Kyrgyzstan, the southern part of Kazakhstan, the northern portion of Afghanistan, and the Xinjiang Autonomous Province in China (also called East Turkestan). There are also negligible parts of Russia, Mongolia, and Iran that are part of Turkestan. Tashkent, the capital of Uzbekistan, is the most populous city in West Turkestan, and Ürümqi, the captal of Xinjiang, is the most populous city in East Turkestan. If one were to imagine an independent and unified Turkestan, one of these two cities would likely become the capital.
