The current should be listed on the motor nameplate as FLC or FLA (full load current/full load amps). Starting current is listed as LRC (locked rotor current). However, to calculate current for any load, divide watts by voltage. 1 hp = 746 watts 85 hp = 63410 watts 63410 watts / 208volts = 304.85 amps 63410 watts / 480 volts = 132.10 amps

∙ 11y agoThere are two ways to find the amperage and both are not accurate as reading the amperage off of the motor's nameplate. The first is by wattage. 1 HP equals 746 watts. 746 x 3 = 2238. Amps = W/V. 2238/230 = 9.7 amps. The second is from the electrical code book which states that a 3 HP motor at 230 volts draws 17 amps. It also states that this amperage is only to be used as a guide. Submersible pumps are supposed to have a stainless steel plate that comes with the pump. This plate should be in the pump house and be readily available if pump information is needed. Look for motor information on the pump controller, sometimes the information label is stuck onto the inside of the controller cover plate. Of the two amperage's I would go with the 9.7 amps. A very accurate way of measuring the amperage is to use a clamp on amp meter. These test instruments can measure the actual ccurrent flow when the motor is operating. If you have an electrician friend ask him to measure the amperage.
