The primary river in Central America is the Amazon. With an estimated length between 6,259 and 6,800 kilometers (3,889 and 4,200 miles), the Amazon is the second longest river in the world (the Nile River in Africa being the longest). It has the largest drainage area in the world, which covers about 40 percent of South America (7,050,000 square kilometers).

Mexico's extensive territory allows for larger rivers than those found in Central America, which due to its nature has shorter distances from its central mountain range known as the Sierra Madre, down to either the Pacific or Caribbean coasts. Some examples are provided:

  • Rio Grande / Rio Bravo (Mexico): 2,018 Km (1,255 mi), flowing into the Gulf of Mexico.
  • Rio Usumacinta (Guatemala, Mexico): 1,100 Km (684 mi), flowing into the Gulf of Mexico.
  • Rio Culiacan (Mexico): 875 Km (544 mi), flowing into the Pacific Ocean.
  • Rio Balsas (Mexico): 770 Km (479 mi), flowing into the Pacific Ocean.
  • Rio Coco (Honduras, Nicaragua): 680 Km (422 mi), flowing into the Caribbean Sea.
  • Rio Motagua (Guatemala, Honduras): 486 Km (302 mi), flowing into the Pacific Ocean.
  • Rio Lempa (El Salvador, Honduras, Guatemala): 422 Km (262 mi), flowing into the Pacific Ocean.

A special mention would be the Panama Canal with a length of just 78 km (48 mi), joining both the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea.
