After WWII the US Department of the Treasury would award a civilian medal struck in .925 silver to individuals who worked in the process of selling of war bonds. My Grandfather was awarded one in Providence RI for providing the artwork for several marketing posters encouraging people to buy war bonds. He was actually employed during the war in lithograph and printing company but unable to serve due to hypertension. It has an engraving on one side of the flag raising at Iwo Jima and what looks like a Colonial soldier on the other side. It also has a cartouche on the back with his name engraved. It is quite tarnished, but I was told to never clean it for some reason. Its my understanding that they are not very rare nor valuable but as a family heirloom, it is quite priceless.
