a domain is the level of classification above kingdom. There are three: bacteria (prokaryotic)

archea (prokaryotic)

eukaryote (eukaryotic)

They were separated because archea were similar to bacteria in structure (no nucleus, cell wall, etc.) but there DNA was similar to eukaryotes. Because of this, scientists separated them into domains.
