This is a pump that circulates water in a water storage cylinder. Stratification is the layering that occurs naturally because of temperature. This is where the ozone layer, called the stratosphere gets its name.
Anyway back to the pump. This is present to mix the water in the storage vessel so that there are no layers of different temperatures if left to stand for some time.
Standing water can introduce things like legionella bacteria growth.
