Australia is completely surrounded by oceans and seas and other bodies of water. It is also known as an island continent.

  • West of Australia is the Indian Ocean and to the east is the Pacific Ocean.
  • South of Tasmania and Australia's southern coastline is the Southern Ocean.
  • North of Australia are the Timor and Arafuraseas
  • To the southeast, between Australia and New Zealand, is the Tasman Sea
  • To the northeast is the Coral Sea.

Not coming under the heading of either "seas" or "oceans" are also the Gulf Of Carpentaria in the north and the Great Australian Bight, which is essentially a wide, open bay which is part of the Southern Ocean.

Between the mainland and Tasmania is Bass Strait while between Cape York in Queensland and Papua New Guinea to the north is Torres Strait.

What is the term for land that is completely surroundrd?

That depends on whether the land is surrounded by water or something else. If it is surrounded by water, it is an island. If it is surrounded by water but is sufficiently large, it may be called an island continent (an example is Australia). If it is a land area completely surrounded by high mountains, rivers will flow to the land that is surrounded instead of to the ocean in that area. That would make the land an endorrheic basin.
