She was on a train, and had an idea : a boy on a train taking him to wizard school, boy didn't know he's a wizard. She thought about it for the whole train ride and wrote it all down. It took her seven years to write and publish her idea.

Her mother's death greatly shaped the Harry Potter series. She confesses that if her mother was still alive, there probably would be no Harry Potter today.

J.K. Rowling has cited a variety of influences for the creation of Harry Potter, including her love of reading and storytelling, her experiences living in Edinburgh, and her journey as a single mother facing challenges. The idea for the character of Harry Potter himself came to her during a delayed train journey.

according to her, she was on a train when she looked up and saw a boy in robes (she didn't know it but they would become hogwarts robes) with untidy black hair, green eyes, glasses, and a lightning shaped scar on his forehead striding down the aisle. and it just came to her. (the boy wasn't real, it was a figment of her imagination)
