The event normally taken to be the beginning of the Dark Ages was the purported fall of Rome in 476 AD. But if what you want is an understanding of what really happened, then you should take this date and the event with more than a grain of salt.

Rome did not actually fall in 476; that was the year the last Roman Emperor of the West abdicated in favor of the Roman Emperor of the East. The Roman Emperors of the East continued to rule for centuries after that, and during much of this time they were acknowledged as emperors by the kings of the Germanic kingdoms, such as the Franks, the Ostrogoths, the Visigoths, the Lombards, and the Burgundians.

If we take the term Dark Ages to mean a time in which there was a drastically reduced amount of literary activity, then the best date to start with might be the death of Julian the Apostate in 363. An even better date might be 235 AD, with beginning of the Crisis of the Third Century. Learning declined badly after both of these, though it recovered somewhat in between. It was pretty badly declined well before 476 and did not change with that date in any way we might notice.

Interestingly, the East Roman Empire began its system of primary education in 425, and kept it open until it fell in 1453. And the oldest school in the UK was opened in 596. So I regard the whole idea of Dark Ages as a gross oversimplification.
