The average atomic mass of an element that occurs naturally in at least one non radioactive isotope represents the sum of the products of multiplying the actual atomic mass of each naturally occurring isotope by the fractional abundance of that particular isotope in naturally occurring sources of the element. For example, the element chlorine occurs naturally as two isotopes: one with mass number 35, an actual atomic mass of 34.968852, and an abundance fraction of 0.7577; and one with mass number 37, actual atomic mass of 36.965903, and relative abundance of 0.2423. Therefore, the average atomic mass of chlorine is [(34.968852)(0.7577) + (36.965903)(0.2423)] or 35.45, to the justified number of significant digits.
