They are especially significant in the gas (air) exchange through to the pulmonary alveolar-capillary membrane.
To get inhaled air to the alveoi for gas exchange
millons of alveoli are in the lungs

The alveoli in Mr. Johnson's lungs were severely damaged from his years of smoking.
An incentive spirometer is often used to promote expansion of the alveoi.
respiratory system consists organs like: nose mouth epiglottis throat trachea bronchi lungs alveoi diaphragram
In the alveoli (also called air sac) is the capillary-rich sac in the lungs where the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide takes place by diffusion. The oxygen poor blood goes from the right ventricle and into the lungs where the co2 is traded for Oxygen in the alveoli and back through the heart and out to the body.
well..i know that the cirulatory system and the respiratory system are dependent on each other because as you breath in, the air goes into your lungs where it passes through the complex alveoli system which connects to the heart. the heart then pumps the oxygen rich blood to all parts of the body. once that's done, the oxygen poor blood comes back to the heart, passes back through the alveoi exchange and then you breath out co2. and i think that the digestive system is related to the circulatory system also. this is because when the "food" gets down to the small intestine, the nutrients are sucked out of it and those nutrients are absorbed into the blood stream in which the heart pumps these nutrients to all parts of the body and the cells take nourishment off of it. but i cant really see how the digestive and the respiratory systems are interlated...
The exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide takes place in between the alveoli and capillaries. Oxygen moves through the cell membrane of the capillaries of the alveoli and then into the blood. Then oxygen is picked up by hemoglobin, and carried to all the body cells. At the same time, waste(carbon dioxide) leaves the body by exhaling --- @luvzbieber
