It has so do with the amount of gold plating is on an item lets say a watch, you take it to the jewelers and by knowing how many microns the gold layer is he can effectively polish your watch or whatever it may be with out hitting the base metal there is a sight that explains it better and gives examples of micron thickness as compared to .
