Timothy was the pastor/bishop of the church at Ephesus. Paul's letters to Timothy were meant to encourage and teach the young pastor how a church is to be lead and the importance of solid doctrine in the church.
Ephesus was a great port city in modern-day Turkey. There were many gods worshiped there, but Artemis/Diana the primary one: "Great is Diana of the Ephesians!" Acts 19:28,34,35. Paul, the Apostle spent three years establishing the Christian church in Ephesus, and later sent Timothy there as the Pastor to keep the church on the right track spiritually. Acts 20:31; 1 Timothy 1:3-7. Ultimately the church shows up in the book of Revelation, having some struggle, because of lack of focus on it's first love for Christ. Revelation 2:1-7.
