What did the Erie Indian tribe wear for clothing?

The Erie were close neighbours and close allies of the Huron and would have dressed very much like them.

They obtained winter furs in trade from Subarctic tribes further north and buffalo hides, robes and native copper from tribes to the west; from their southern neighbours such as the Neutrals they obtained black squirrel skins that they made into distinctive winter robes that were the envy of their neighbours. Furs could be made into warm caps, mittens, moccasins and even snowshoes. Men wore a fitted breech-cloth with ends hanging to mid-thigh, leggings and a kind of poncho, all of brain-tanned deerskin (buckskin). Women originally wore only a fringed wrap-around skirt reaching to mid-calf, with a poncho-like garment added in cool weather. By the time of contact with early explorers they wore a strap-and-sleeve dress of two deerskins held in place by shoulder straps, some with detachable sleeves. Moccasins were frequently dyed black using walnuts and had either a seam from toe to instep or a puckered vamp known as the "bullnose" style. Decoration was either of dyed porcupine quills woven into designs, or elaborate moose-hair embroidery.

Women's hair was gathered into a single thick braid at the back, tied with a thin leather strap. Men dressed their hair in various ways: shaving half the head, wearing it long and loose or with only the central strip unshaved. Men painted and tattooed their skin, women did not.

Bird bones, red slate, native copper, shells and small stones were turned into necklaces, bracelets and anklets - some women at celebrations are said to have worn more than ten pounds (weight) of these native beads.
