Spanish explorer Hernando Cortes' arrived in what is now called Mexico, for anthropology purposes, it was Mesoamerica, he found it to be occupied by a great number of ethnic groups with highly distinctive cultures and languages. Even languages that did not seem to fit into the territory where he established his base of operations. The most engaging civilization he discovered was the Aztec empire.

The Spanish found the Aztecs. This gave them souls to convert to their religion, and they took the Aztecs gold. The Aztecs had a lot of gold.
