Saul was a Jew in the line of Benjamin, raised as a Pharisee (Philippians 3:5-8), well educated and zealous for the traditions of Judaism(Acts 22:3), trained as a tent maker(Acts 18:3) and born a Roman citizen(Acts 22:27-28) in the 'free city' of Tarsus. At Acts 22:1-5 and Acts 26:8-11 he himself describes his actions before his conversion. He was a 'blasphemer and a persecutor and an insolent man', who fiercely attacked 'Christians' (any who followed 'The Way'), persecuting the congregation of God and devastating it(Acts 9:1+2)(1 Corinthians 15:9) ...invading one house after another and, dragging out both men and women, and turning them over to prison(Acts 8:3)(1 Timothy 1:13) (1 Timothy 1:12-16) supporting and approving of the killing of the faithful man, Stephen(Acts 7:58-8:1). Because he was raised a Hebrew with Roman citizenship, he probably had both his Roman name, Paul, and his Hebrew name, Saul, from childhood, most likely choosing to use his Roman name after his conversion because of the special commission he was given to 'preach to the nations' (Galatians 2:7+8).
