This is a very thoughtful question. Hamilton was convinced that if the Constitution wasn't ratified then states would form into confederation of states: New England and NY; the middle states; and the southern states. These confederations would develop their own diplomatic relationships with European countries and that would end up dividing the country. Read "The Federalist" - 85 essays aka "The Federalist Papers". It thoroughly answers these questions in great depth.
