We are not doctors on this site, but we do provide SOME research to get you off to a kicking start. This means we will calm your fears or tell you to get to the doctor immediately rather than risk our lack of knowledge regarding your health. The specialists have the answers! Please stay off the internet regarding your condition because it's simply too complex for most laymen to understand and one could get the wrong impression and worry over nothing. Already you feel you have another disease and it's highly possible you DO NOT! You don't need stress, you need rest and work closely with your Cardiologist and family doctor. Please write your concerns down and make an appointment right away so you will relieve your mind. Bypass surgery has a high success rate. The following was taken off a Cardiologist's site: A large number of studies have shown that after coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG), a transient creatinine kinase MB (CK-MB) elevation above the upper reference limit is very common. The cause of this enzyme increase and its clinical significance have long been uncertain and controversial, but recent reports indicate that after CABG, elevated post-operative concentrations of CK-MB correlate to an increased risk of long-term mortality. After percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), CK-MB elevation has been shown to correlate to a finding of myocardial necrosis. Such an association has to date never been proved in CABG patients. The lack of a diagnostic gold standard and absence of an established definition of perioperative myocardial infarction after CABG have promoted the use of different diagnostic criteria, which in turn has contributed to a wide variation in the reported incidence of perioperative myocardial infarction, ranging from 2% to 82%.

It is quite common what you are having. It is VERY important that you write down any questions you may have regarding your high levels of troponin and MK-MB fraction levels and what to expect after your cardiac bypass surgery. I URGE YOU to take a your partner or a good friend along with you as an extra set of ears. You are the one that is worried (don't blame you) and you may misinterpret what the specialist is telling you. There are some people that will go through a depressive period after heart surgery, but this is treatable by your physician and will eventually subside. My husband has Atrial Fibrillation and a slightly enlarged heart and I always go in with him to take notes and ask questions. It is common for the person with the heart condition to be nervous and perhaps miss the interpretation of what the doctor is telling them.

How long does troponin remain elevated?

up to 2 weeks

What does an elevated troponin T level mean?

Cardiac troponin levels are usually too low to measure. Elevated troponin T levels indicate that there has been some form of damage to the heart.Strenuous exercise can also temporarily elevate troponin levels for a brief time. The effects of a heart attack would keep troponin T levels elevated for up to two weeks.

What substance's levels are elevated when cardiac muscle tissue is damaged?

Troponin and CK MB

What type of enzyme indicates some sort of negative cardiac event occured?

The enzymes that would indicate that a negative cardiac event has occurred are creatinephosphokinase and creatine kinase. Also the proteins troponin I and troponin T would also be elevated in the blood.

Is tropomyosin found in smooth muscle?

smooth muscle doesn't have troponin, instead it has caldmodulin

What is the molecular composition of troponin?

Troponin is a major component of muscle tissue. It is composed of troponin C, troponin I, and troponin T. Troponin interacts with tropomyosin and myosin to create muscle contraction.

Cardiac enzymes and troponin elevate what?

Cardiac enzymes and troponin levels do not elevate anything. Rather, when you have a heart attack (MI), they are elevated. Unlike damage to any other muscle in your body, damage to the cardiac muscle causes the release of specific cardiac enzymes. Therefore, if they are elevated, you had damage to your heart (i.e. heart attack). I disagree with the above: If both are elevated then you may have had a heart attack but, if cardiac enzymes alone are elevated and not troponin levels then you will not have had a heart attack. That's my personal experience. Troponin levels are now considered a more accurate indicator of damage to the heart muscle as a result of a heart attack than cardiac enzymes which can apply to any other muscle group rather than the heart. In fact to use the word 'cardiac' in this context is misleading because if you sprain your ankle for instance 'cardiac' enzymes will be released into the blood! So, where is the connection between damage to your ankle and that of your heart? Both enzymes therefore need to be elevated to indicate heart damage reliably.

What is the diagnostic window of troponins?

Troponin levels rise within four to six hours after the beginning of chest pain or heart damage, and stay elevated for at least one week.

What holds tropomyosin in place at rest?

troponin molecules.

What is a normal level of troponin in blood?

The theraputic troponin level is 0.00.

What is troponin testing?

Troponin testing is done to diagnose heart attacks (myocardial infarctions).

How are troponins I and T different?

cardiac troponin I tests measure only cardiac troponin; tests for cardiac troponin T may cross-react with troponin found in other muscles and give positive or increased results in the absence of heart damage.
