The producers in a ecosystem have the greatest biomass. These are grasses, shrubs and trees. Algae come under this classification as well. Without the consumers, the ecosystem would not exist.

  • Cow biomass exceeds 650 million tonnes (1.3 billion cattle conservatively weighing 500 kg each).
  • The only wild species in the running is Antarctic Krill. A 2009 global estimate gives 379 million tonnes fresh biomass, but unknown aspects of this shrimp's ecology make it hard to be sure.
  • By comparison, blue whales (with their krill-based diet) comprised about 35 million tonnes pre-whaling, and about half a million tonnes in 2001
  • One may say that among the most widespread animals are humans. 6.9 billion people averaging 50 kg each equals roughly 350 million tonnes.
  • In the animal kingdom, ironically, the smallest creatures in an ecosystem typically represent the largest quantity of its biomass. It is important to note that the relative biomass species mix may change considerably from season to season and even from year to year.
  • In their book "Ant Ecology," Lach, Parr, and Abbott (2010) quote Holldobler and Wilson (1990) in saying that "The estimated 10,000 trillion individual ants alive at any one time weigh about as much as all human beings combined." But the main reason the answer ants don't have the largest biomass on earth is that ants are not a single species. Ants are a taxonomic family with more than 14,000 described species and subspecies, so it's really unfair to compare their biomass with, say, leopards or bull frogs. Or humans or Antarctic krill.

What kind of arthropod makes up the largest group of animals on earth?

Class Insecta (the insects) under Arthropoda seems to have the highest count on earth. Even approximating the count is difficult but estimates amount up to ten quintillion (10,000,000,000,000,000,000) individuals alive at any one moment. Arthropoda itself has the greatest number of animal species described of any phylum, at over one million. Of any of these, krill are estimated at having the highest total biomass, something over a half billion tonnes (Note that non-animal biomass, for example bacteria or plants, is higher).

What is the largest class in the phylum Cnidaria?

The largest class in the phylum Cnidaria is the class Anthozoa, which includes species such as corals and sea anemones. These are typically sessile (non-moving) organisms that can form large colonies and play important roles in marine ecosystems.

The class Malacostraca is the largest taxonomic class of?

The class Malacostraca is the largest taxonomic class of crustaceans, including familiar species like crabs, lobsters, and shrimp. These animals are characterized by having a hard exoskeleton, jointed limbs, and two pairs of antennae. Malacostraca are found in a variety of aquatic habitats worldwide.

What is an example of an animal in the malacostraca class?
